Artist Statement
I am a ceramic artist interested in exploring concepts of environmental sustainability through clay.
I have worked with clay since I was a kid, and have loved the forgiving nature of working with unfired clay. In contrast, once clay is fired, it becomes permanent. Ceramics can exist on this planet for thousands of years. I am interested in exploring the process and limitations of working with clay in the context of thinking about environmental impact.
As a queer artist, I am also interested in creating projects that explore gender and sexuality with my work. I explore connections between the ceramic vessel, and the human body. I want to deconstruct what makes an object, bodily, and in doing so deconstruct gender. My work is human in both subject matter and mark-making. The pieces show the impact of my hands on the clay.
In my “sea creatures” series, I explore the vessel as a lightholder. The lanterns explore vulnerability and power, with soft shiny insides and spiky, stone-like exteriors. I utilize glazed orifices and unglazed exteriors to reflect and retain light.
Moving forward I want to work more with materiality. I want to learn methods to source materials more sustainably.
